The opportunity of adversity
"Adversity is just change that we haven’t adapted ourselves to yet."
Adversity comes in many different forms: tragedies, emotional heartbreaks, psychological impairments, or just minor roadblocks. Aimee Mullins’ came in the form of a physical disability as she was born without shinbones.
In this heartfelt talk, Aimee Mullins talks about how we frame adversity as something we need to get around in order to resume our lives and those stigmatized with more permanent forms of adversity are typically viewed as not being able to live as fulfilling a life as the rest of us. This is wrong.
Adversity paves the way for the unique experiences that shape who you are. It is not adversity that weakens you. Quite the contrary, it is the very thing that strengthens you. It is more often how we negatively stigmatize our own and other people’s adversities that frame our shortcomings rather than the adversity itself.
Aimee Mullins has a beautiful soul and this is a very emotional and inspiring speech.
